LLM SEO: what it is and how to get mentioned by AI

Short answer

LLM SEO is making your brand easy for AI chat and search tools to find, understand, and cite. Unblock AI search crawlers, put clear answers on indexed pages, and earn mentions on sites assistants already read. Then check whether AI can read your pages — and whether they name you for buyer questions.

People still use Google. They also ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI answers which tool, agency, or local business to pick. When those systems answer, they name a short list of brands. LLM SEO (sometimes called LLM optimization) is the work of raising the odds that your brand is one of them.

This guide covers what LLM SEO is, how it differs from classic SEO, how AI systems pick sources, the practical steps that actually help, the mistakes that waste time, and where Rankateer fits — honestly.

If you only care about ChatGPT, start with our step-by-step guide on how to rank in ChatGPT. If you want the wider category behind the buzzwords, the related field is generative engine optimization (GEO) — optimizing for AI answer engines, not only the classic ten blue links.

What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO means optimizing so large language models (LLMs) and the AI search products built on them can retrieve your content, understand your brand, and mention or cite you in answers.

It sits next to a few related labels you will see online:

  • AI search optimization — the plain-English name for the same job across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews / AI Mode, and similar products.
  • Generative engine optimization (GEO) — research and industry shorthand for optimizing for generative answer engines (see GEO).
  • Answer engine optimization (AEO) — optimizing so answer engines (AI or classic featured answers) quote you; buyers often use GEO and AEO interchangeably.

You do not need all four labels. Treat LLM SEO / LLM optimization as the search terms people type, and AI visibility as the outcome that matters: being named, cited, or linked when a buyer asks an assistant for help.

There is no paid slot in ChatGPT's organic answers, and no vendor can guarantee a mention. OpenAI says there is no way to guarantee top placement in ChatGPT search. Google says its AI features use the normal Search index and need no special "AI-only" markup. Treat every tactic below as raising odds, not as a ranking formula.

How LLM SEO differs from classic SEO

Classic SEO and LLM SEO share a foundation. They are not the same job.

Classic SEO compared with LLM SEO and AI visibility

What stays the same

  • Pages still need to be crawlable and indexed.
  • Clear titles, headings, and honest structured data still help machines.
  • Authority and trust still come from other people writing about you.

What changes

  • The unit of competition is often a short passage, not a whole page.
  • Assistants expand one question into several searches, then pick extractable answers.
  • A competitor with weaker rankings can still win the mention if other trusted pages name them and your page is hard to quote.

So: keep doing good SEO. Add work that makes your brand easy to retrieve, easy to quote, and hard to confuse with someone else.

How AI assistants pick sources

Exact pipelines differ by product, but the public pattern is consistent.

  1. Decide whether to search. Some tools search almost every time (Perplexity). Others search when the question needs fresh or specific facts (ChatGPT with search, Claude with web search). Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's Search index.
  2. Retrieve candidates. The assistant (or its search partner) pulls pages from an index or live crawl. If you are not in that index, or a bot is blocked, you are out before the model writes a word.
  3. Select passages. Models prefer clear, self-contained spans: a heading that matches the question, then a direct answer with facts.
  4. Generate and cite. The answer is written from the selected evidence. Citations are attached to some claims — not always perfectly, and not to every source that was read.

Google's documentation is blunt: to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. No special AI file is required.

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI's search crawler is OAI-SearchBot. Blocking it in robots.txt (or at the firewall) keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search summaries. GPTBot is a separate training crawler; blocking GPTBot does not block OAI-SearchBot.

Third-party research keeps pointing to the same levers: pages with clear citations, statistics, and quotations tend to do better in generative-engine tests (see the Princeton-led GEO study), and brand mentions across the web correlate with how often assistants name a brand (Ahrefs' multi-engine brand studies). Correlation is not a guarantee — but it matches how retrieval works.

Practical LLM SEO steps

Do these in order. Skip the shiny extras until the basics pass.

1. Make sure AI systems can reach and read your pages

Technical crawlability is the entry fee.

  • Allow the search crawlers you care about in robots.txt (for example OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, Bingbot). Decide on training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) separately — blocking training does not always block search.
  • Confirm your CDN or bot protection is not silently dropping those bots.
  • Put key facts in the HTML, not only behind JavaScript. Many fetchers read the first response.
  • Fix noindex / nosnippet mistakes on pages you want quoted.
  • Get indexed in Google and Bing. ChatGPT search has used outside search providers; Bing indexing is a cheap hedge and helps Copilot. Google AI features require Google index eligibility.

Quick check: run any important URL through Rankateer's free AI visibility checker. It checks robots.txt, llms.txt, whether major AI crawlers are blocked, how much text is readable without JavaScript, and basic on-page signals. It measures readiness (can AI read the page?), not whether an assistant already mentions your brand.

2. Make your brand an unambiguous entity

Assistants mix up similar names. Reduce that risk.

  • Use one brand name and one plain one-liner everywhere: homepage, About, social profiles, directories.
  • On About and homepage, say who you serve, what you sell, where you operate, and public pricing if you have it.
  • Add honest Organization (or LocalBusiness) JSON-LD that matches visible text, with sameAs links to official profiles.
  • Keep name, address, and phone consistent across the site and Google Business Profile when you are local.

Structured data is not a magic ranking switch. Google says no special schema is required for its AI features. Clear, consistent facts still help machines — and humans — know who you are.

3. Write passages worth quoting

Structure content for extraction.

  • Answer first. Open each major section with a 40–60 word direct answer, then explain.
  • Use customer-worded questions as H2s and H3s.
  • Prefer specifics: numbers, time frames, prices, named sources, and first-hand process detail.
  • Add citations, statistics, and short quotations where they are true. In GEO research benchmarks, those changes helped more than keyword stuffing (which often hurt).
  • Cover the sub-questions assistants fan out into (who it is for, pricing shape, alternatives, limitations).

Thin affiliate-style pages that say nothing only you could say rarely win mentions.

4. Earn mentions on the pages assistants already trust

Often the biggest lever sits off your site.

  • Get into honest "best X" lists and comparison articles in your category.
  • Keep review profiles accurate (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Google Business Profile, niche directories).
  • Show up in communities where buyers already ask — without fake accounts or hype.
  • Earn independent coverage. Wikipedia and other reference pages get cited often in some studies; you cannot write your own Wikipedia article, but you can earn the coverage that makes you notable.
  • Publish a clear demo or explainer on video when it fits your category.

When ChatGPT or Perplexity answers a buyer question, look at the sources they cite. Those URLs are your outreach list.

5. Add llms.txt only after the basics

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file that gives AI agents a short map of your site. It is cheap. Set expectations: it is not an official standard, Google says Search ignores it, and major assistants have not committed to using it. Do crawlability, indexing, entity clarity, quotable pages, and third-party mentions first. Treat llms.txt as optional housekeeping, not a ranking lever. You can make the file with the free llms.txt generator.

6. Measure mentions, not vanity scores

Pick 10–20 real buyer questions ("best {category} for {audience}", "{competitor} alternatives", "who does {job} in {city}"). Then:

  1. Ask them in ChatGPT (search on), Perplexity, and Google AI when it appears.
  2. Record whether you are named, cited with a link, and which competitors and sources show up.
  3. Repeat over weeks — answers vary by wording, model, and timing.
  4. Track referral traffic tagged from assistants (for example utm_source=chatgpt.com in analytics).
  5. Re-check that your own pages stay readable with the AI visibility checker.

Common LLM SEO mistakes

  1. Blocking AI crawlers in bulk in 2023–2024 and never revisiting robots.txt or the WAF.
  2. Chasing GEO jargon while key pages are not indexed or have no clear answer block.
  3. Treating llms.txt or schema as a silver bullet. Neither replaces being findable and quotable.
  4. Keyword stuffing for "ChatGPT" or "AI overview" phrases. Assistants prefer clear facts over stuffed copy.
  5. Confusing readiness with mentions. A green "AI can read this page" check is necessary. It is not the same as "ChatGPT recommends us."
  6. Ignoring third-party mentions. If every "best tools" list names your competitors and not you, on-site polish alone rarely fixes it.
  7. Buying "guaranteed ChatGPT ranking" services. There is no official placement product for organic answers.
  8. Measuring once. One screenshot proves almost nothing.

How Rankateer fits LLM SEO

Most SEO suites stop at research and reports. Most AI-visibility tools stop at monitoring charts. Rankateer is built as an operating system for SEO and AI visibility: watch signals, find gaps, propose fixes, act after approval, and measure what changed.

Inside the product, the agent Ranger runs that loop — Watch → Find → Propose → Act → Measure. High-impact changes wait for your approval. Rankateer does not promise rankings or AI citations.

Honest limits today

  • The free AI visibility checker tells you whether AI systems can read a page (crawlers, readable text, basic structure). It does not report brand-mention share inside ChatGPT or Perplexity.
  • Ranger's live AI visibility check currently covers Google's AI (grounded Google AI answers). It does not yet track ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions as a live product feature. You can still run those checks manually with the prompt set above while Rankateer helps with crawl readiness, opportunities, approved fixes, and measurement of what shipped.

Where Rankateer is strong for this job: turning AI-visibility and classic SEO gaps into a ranked queue of next actions, not another dashboard to ignore. That is also the wedge versus broad suites like Semrush — citations and actionability, not matching every research report. See Rankateer vs Semrush and our roundup of the best search visibility audit tools.

Plans: $1 for the first 7 days, then $29/month — details on pricing.

Soft next steps

FAQ

What is LLM SEO in plain words?

LLM SEO is making your brand easy for AI chat and AI search tools to find, understand, and mention when buyers ask for recommendations. It builds on classic SEO and adds passage clarity, crawler access, and third-party mentions.

Is LLM SEO the same as GEO or AEO?

They overlap. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are related names for optimizing for AI or answer-style results. LLM SEO / LLM optimization is the phrase many people search. The goal is the same: be named or cited in AI answers. See our GEO overview when you want the category deep-dive.

Does classic SEO still matter for ChatGPT and Google AI?

Yes. Indexing, crawlability, clear pages, and real trust signals still matter. AI answers usually retrieve from search indexes or crawlers. Weak classic SEO makes LLM SEO much harder.

How do I check if AI can see my website?

Use a readiness check such as Rankateer's free AI visibility checker for crawler blocks and readable text. Separately, ask real buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI to see if your brand is mentioned. Those are two different tests.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

No paid placement exists for ChatGPT's organic answers, and OpenAI says top placement cannot be guaranteed. Focus on access, clarity, evidence, and earned mentions.

What should I do first if I am new to LLM optimization?

Unblock AI search crawlers, confirm key pages are indexed, add a clear About / entity story, put answer-first sections on your best pages, then list the third-party pages assistants cite for your category and work on earning a place there. Details for ChatGPT specifically: how to rank in ChatGPT.

Does Rankateer track ChatGPT and Perplexity mentions?

Not as a live product feature today. Rankateer helps with AI readiness, Google AI grounded visibility checks, ranked opportunities, approved actions, and measurement. Use manual prompt checks for ChatGPT and Perplexity until multi-engine tracking ships. The free checker remains a readability / readiness tool, not a mention-share report.
