How to use the llms.txt generator

  1. Enter your website address. For example, https://yourbusiness.com.
  2. Add your site name and a short description. One or two plain sentences: what you do, who it's for, and where you work. This becomes the summary at the top of the file.
  3. Add your key pages. Type them in, or click Find my pages to pull them from your sitemap and tick the ones you want. For each page, add a title and an optional one-line note, like "Prices for all three plans."
  4. Sort pages into sections. Main pages, services, guides, policies. Put nice-to-have pages in Optional.
  5. Check the preview. The format check confirms the file is laid out correctly.
  6. Copy or download. You get a file named llms.txt, ready to upload.

Tip: less is more. Five to twenty pages is plenty for most small business sites. Pick the pages a new customer would need: home, services, pricing, about, contact, and your best guides.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain text file that gives AI tools a short, tidy map of your website. It sits at your site root, like yoursite.com/llms.txt, next to files you may already have, such as robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

The idea was proposed in 2024 by Jeremy Howard and is described at llmstxt.org. The reasoning is simple. Web pages are built for people, with menus, pop-ups, and scripts. An AI tool that lands on your site has to dig through all of that to work out what matters. An llms.txt file skips the digging. It says: here's who we are, and here are the pages worth reading.

The file is written in Markdown, a simple way to format text with symbols. It has a set order:

  • A title (one # line) with your site or business name. This is the only required part.
  • A summary (a line starting with >) that explains what you do.
  • Optional details in plain sentences.
  • Sections (lines starting with ##), each with a list of links in the form [Page title](URL): short note.
  • An "Optional" section, by convention, for pages an AI tool can skip if it's short on space.

You don't need to remember any of this. The generator above handles the format for you.

llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml

FileWhat it doesWho it's for
robots.txtTells crawlers which parts of your site they may or may not visitSearch engines and AI crawlers
sitemap.xmlLists every page you want foundSearch engines
llms.txtA short, hand-picked guide to your most useful pages, with notesAI tools and agents

The big difference: robots.txt controls access. llms.txt does not block or allow anything. It's a guide, not a gate.

llms.txt example

Here's an llms txt example for a small local business. You can use it as a model for your own file.

# Maple Street Bakery

- [Blog](https://maplestreetbakery.com/blog): Recipes and baking tips

Notice what makes it work: plain words, real facts (location, delivery area, lead times), and a short note on every link so an AI tool knows what each page holds before it opens it.

Where to upload your llms.txt file

Upload the file to the root of your website so it opens at:

https://yoursite.com/llms.txt

How to do that depends on how your site is built:

  • WordPress: some SEO plugins, such as Yoast SEO and AIOSEO, can create and manage an llms.txt file for you. You can also upload the file to your site's main folder with your host's file manager.
  • Wix: Wix creates an llms.txt file for sites automatically. Check yours before adding another.
  • Shopify, Squarespace, Webflow, and others: options vary. Search your platform's help center for "llms.txt" or "upload file to root." If it isn't possible yet, ask your developer.
  • Custom sites: put llms.txt in the same public folder as robots.txt.

Then check it. Open yoursite.com/llms.txt in a private browser window. You should see your text, not an error page. Update the file when you add, rename, or remove important pages. An out-of-date map is worse than no map.

Does llms.txt help? An honest answer

Short version: it's a low-effort helper, not a ranking boost. Here's what is and isn't known as of October 2026.

What it won't do:

  • It won't improve your Google rankings or Google AI answers. Google's own guidance says you don't need special AI text files to appear in Google Search, AI Overviews, or AI Mode, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt. Having one neither helps nor hurts.
  • It won't make AI tools mention or cite you. No major AI company has said that its crawlers read site owners' llms.txt files. Their crawler instructions point to robots.txt instead. Independent studies of server logs have found that major AI crawlers rarely request llms.txt at all.
  • It won't fix a site AI can't read. If your pages are blocked or load as empty shells, a list of links to them doesn't help.

What it can do:

  • Give AI tools and agents a clean starting point. When an AI assistant or browsing agent is already on your site, a short, accurate map can save it from guessing. This is what the format was designed for.
  • Pass a newer check. Google's Chrome Lighthouse tool now checks for a correctly formatted llms.txt in its "agentic browsing" audit. A missing file is fine; a broken one gets flagged.
  • Make you write down what matters. Choosing your ten most important pages and describing each in one line is a useful exercise on its own.

It takes about five minutes and costs nothing, which is why many sites add one. Just don't expect it to move traffic. The things that do matter for AI visibility are the same basics as before: pages AI crawlers can access, clear answers on indexed pages, and real mentions on other trusted sites. Our guides cover those in plain words.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an llms.txt file?

An llms.txt file is a short text file at the root of your website, such as yoursite.com/llms.txt, that lists your site's name, a one-line summary, and links to your most important pages with brief notes. It follows a format proposed at llmstxt.org to help AI tools find your key pages quickly.

Where do I put my llms.txt file?

Put it at the root of your domain so it opens at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, in the same place as robots.txt. Some platforms, such as Wix and WordPress SEO plugins like Yoast SEO and AIOSEO, can create it for you. After uploading, open the address in a browser to make sure it loads.

Does llms.txt improve my Google rankings or AI Overviews?

No. Google says Google Search does not use llms.txt, and that creating one will neither help nor harm your visibility or rankings in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Treat it as an optional helper for AI tools, not an SEO tactic.

Do ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity read llms.txt?

None of these companies has said that its crawlers read site owners' llms.txt files, and their crawler guides point to robots.txt instead. They do publish llms.txt files for their own developer docs. Independent log studies have found major AI crawlers rarely request the file.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt tells crawlers which parts of your site they may visit, so it controls access. llms.txt does not block or allow anything. It is a short, hand-picked guide to your most useful pages. You can have both, and you should keep robots.txt correct either way.

Is this llms.txt generator really free?

Yes. The generator is free, with no signup, no email, and no paywall. It runs in your browser, so the details you type stay on your device. The only thing sent to our server is your site address, and only if you click Find my pages to read your sitemap.

Before you upload: can AI read the pages you listed?

An llms.txt file points AI tools to your pages. It can't help if those pages are blocked to AI crawlers or load as an empty shell. Paste one of your key pages into Rankateer's free AI visibility checker to see whether AI can read it. It checks readability. It does not measure whether AI mentions your brand.
