What is AI visibility? How to check it and improve it

Short answer

AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews mention, recommend or link to your business when people ask questions you should be the answer to. Start by making sure AI can read your website, then ask those tools ten real customer questions and note who they name.

More people now ask a chatbot before they search. "Who's the best family dentist near me?" "Which bookkeeping software is easiest for a small shop?" The AI writes one answer and names a few businesses. If yours isn't one of them, that customer may never see your website.

This guide explains AI visibility in plain words: what it is, how it differs from Google rankings, how to check yours by hand, and what to fix first. No hype, and no promises nobody can keep.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is whether AI answer tools include your business in their answers, and how well they describe you when they do.

"AI answer tools" means chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, AI search engines such as Perplexity, and the AI answers Google now shows above its normal results (called AI Overviews and AI Mode).

Two words come up all the time:

  • A mention is when the AI names your business in its answer.
  • A citation is when the AI links to one of your web pages as a source.

They are different. An AI can name you without linking to you, because it learned about you from other sites. It can also link to your article without naming your business. Good AI visibility usually means both, for the questions your customers actually ask.

You'll also see related terms: AI search visibility (the same idea, focused on AI search tools), AI brand visibility (how your brand comes across in AI answers), and generative engine optimization, or GEO, which is the work of improving AI visibility.

Why AI visibility matters now

Because more buying decisions now start inside an AI answer.

The numbers are large. An August 2026 measurement framework from IAB, the US advertising industry body, notes that ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly users, Google's AI Overviews reach over 2.5 billion people a month, and AI Overviews now appear on almost half of Google searches.

Three things make this different from classic search:

  1. 1. The shortlist is short. A results page shows ten links. An AI answer often names only a handful of businesses. If you're not on that list, you're absent.
  2. 2. People may not click. They read the answer and decide. Your name in the answer can matter as much as a visit.
  3. 3. Hardly anyone is measuring it yet. The same IAB report says only 16% of brands track AI visibility in a systematic way. A small business that starts now isn't late.

Google rankings still matter, because AI tools pull heavily from search indexes. They just no longer tell the whole story.

AI visibility vs SEO rankings

SEO rankings tell you where your page sits in a list of links. AI visibility tells you whether an AI answer names, links or describes you correctly.

SEO rankings compared with AI visibility
AspectSEO rankingsAI visibility
What you winA position in a list of linksA mention, a citation, or both, inside one written answer
How many winnersAbout 10 on page oneUsually a handful of names per answer
How stableFairly steady day to dayChanges with wording, the AI tool and the date
What you measurePosition, clicks, impressionsMention rate, citation rate, accuracy, share vs competitors
What counts as successA click to your siteBeing named and described correctly, even without a click
Where you see itGoogle Search Console, rank trackersAsking the AI tools, or a tracker that does it for you
What drives itRelevance, links, technical healthAll of that, plus clear quotable facts and what other sites say about you

The overlap is big. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practice. So good SEO gets you into the pool. AI visibility is about whether you get picked from it.

The five parts of AI visibility

"AI visibility" covers five separate questions. Checking each one tells you what to fix.

1. Can AI read you?

Before an AI can mention or link you, its crawlers (the robots that fetch web pages) have to be allowed in, and your key facts have to be readable. Common blockers: a robots.txt file (a small text file that tells robots where they can't go) that blocks AI crawlers, security settings that turn bots away, and important text that only appears after JavaScript runs.

2. Does AI mention you?

Ask real customer questions, the kind that don't include your name, and see if you're named. This is the part most people mean by AI visibility.

3. Does AI cite or link you?

Look at the sources under the answer. Is one of your pages there? Citations send visitors and show the AI trusts your page as evidence.

4. Is what AI says accurate?

Being named with old prices, the wrong city or a service you stopped offering can hurt more than not being named. Ask "What does [your business] do?" and check every fact.

5. How do you compare with competitors?

Note which businesses get named instead of you, and which websites the AI keeps citing. This is often called share of voice: your mentions compared with your competitors' mentions for the same questions.

How to check your AI visibility

You can do a useful first check by hand, for free, in under an hour. Then decide whether you need a tool.

The manual prompt test

  1. Write 10 customer questions. Use the words customers use, and leave your brand name out. Mix types: "best [service] in [city]", "[service] for [type of customer]", "[competitor] alternatives", and "how much does [service] cost in [city]".
  2. Ask each question in a fresh chat in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and search it on Google to see if an AI Overview appears. A fresh chat stops earlier conversations from skewing the answer.
  3. Log every answer in a spreadsheet. Columns: question, tool, date, named (yes/no), linked (yes/no), facts correct (yes/no), competitors named, sources cited.
  4. Ask one branded question per tool: "What is [your business] and who is it for?" Check every fact.
  5. Repeat on two more days. AI answers change between runs, so one screenshot proves very little. Three rounds give you a fair starting picture.
  6. Do the maths. Your mention rate for each tool is answers that named you divided by all answers. Keep each tool separate. An average across tools hides the one where you're missing.

Tools that help

  • Readiness checkers test whether AI can read a page. Rankateer's free AI visibility checker fetches your page, its robots.txt and its llms.txt, then reports whether major AI crawlers are blocked, how much text is readable without JavaScript, and basic page structure. It does not ask ChatGPT or any other AI whether it mentions you. It answers part 1 only.
  • Mention trackers ask AI tools a set of questions on a schedule and record mentions, citations and competitors. Each covers different AI tools with its own method, so check what's included before trusting the numbers.
  • Your analytics. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends, so you can see that traffic in Google Analytics. Note that Google Search Console mixes AI Overview data into normal search results, so it can't show your Google AI visibility on its own.

For a wider look at audit tools, see our roundup of the best search visibility audit tools. The free checker is a readiness tool. What that tool is, and what it does not measure, is covered in what is an AI visibility checker.

The 5-minute AI visibility self-check

No tools, no signup. Tick each box you can honestly tick.

  • Robots.txt. Open yourwebsite.com/robots.txt. Make sure there's no Disallow: / under User-agent: *, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot or Bingbot.
  • Readable text. Open your homepage, right-click and choose "View page source". Can you find your business name, what you do and where you work in that text?
  • One-line description. Your homepage says who you serve, what you sell and where, in one plain sentence near the top.
  • Indexed. Search site:yourwebsite.com on Google and on Bing. Your key pages show up on both.
  • Category question. Ask ChatGPT "best [your service] in [your city]" in a fresh chat. Were you named?
  • Branded question. Ask "What is [your business]?" Is every fact correct, including prices and location?
  • Sources. In Perplexity, ask your category question and note the sources it cites. Are you on any of those sites?
  • Competitors. Write down the businesses named instead of you. That's your benchmark.

Five or more ticks is a solid base. The unticked boxes are your to-do list, in order.

How to improve AI visibility, step by step

Do these in order. The early steps are cheap and unblock everything after them.

Step 1: Let AI in

Allow the search crawlers you want: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot. OpenAI's documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are kept out of ChatGPT's search summaries. Training crawlers such as GPTBot are a separate choice; blocking GPTBot doesn't block ChatGPT search. Also check your hosting or security service, since some now block AI bots by default. Run your key pages through the free checker to confirm.

Step 2: Get indexed in Google and Bing

Google's AI answers draw from Google's own index. ChatGPT search also uses outside search providers, and Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; both are free.

Step 3: Say clearly who you are

Use one business name and one plain description everywhere: your homepage, About page, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Put real facts on your site: services, areas served, prices if you share them, hours. AI tools mix up businesses with similar names. Consistency helps them get you right.

Step 4: Make your pages easy to quote

Start each section with a direct two- or three-sentence answer, then explain. Use the questions customers ask as headings. Include specifics: numbers, prices, time frames, named sources. Research on generative engines (the Princeton-led GEO study) found that adding statistics, quotes and citations helped pages get used in AI answers more than keyword stuffing did. For deeper tactics, read our guide to LLM SEO.

Step 5: Get mentioned where AI already looks

This is often the biggest lever. Note the sites AI cites for your category questions: review sites, directories, "best of" lists, industry blogs, forums. Keep review profiles current, ask happy customers for reviews, and pitch list-makers honestly. For ChatGPT-specific moves, see how to rank in ChatGPT.

Step 6: Fix wrong facts at the source

If AI repeats an old price or address, it read it somewhere. Update your own pages first, then the directory or review profile that still shows the old details.

Step 7: Add an llms.txt file (optional)

An llms.txt file is a short, plain-text map of your site written for AI tools. It's cheap to add, but it isn't an official standard, and Google has said Search doesn't use it. Do steps 1 to 6 first. If you want one, our llms.txt generator builds it for you.

Step 8: Measure monthly

Re-run the same questions every month, on the same tools, and compare mention rates. Change one thing at a time where you can, so you know what helped.

What an "AI visibility score" means (and its limits)

An AI visibility score is a single number, often 0 to 100, that a tool uses to sum up your AI visibility. It can be useful for spotting a trend. But there's no industry standard for it.

IAB's 2026 report counts more than 20 companies selling AI visibility measurement, each with its own method, and notes there's no common definition of a "mention." So a 40 from one tool and a 40 from another may not mean the same thing. Some scores measure something else entirely: Rankateer's free checker gives a readiness score (can AI read this page?), not a mention score (does AI name you?).

Before you trust any score, ask four questions:

  1. Which questions? Questions that include your brand name inflate the score.
  2. Which AI tools? A blended score can hide a tool where you're invisible.
  3. How many runs? AI answers change from run to run. One run is a sample of one.
  4. Readiness or mentions? Know which one you're looking at.

And remember: a higher score is not the same as more customers. Track enquiries and sales separately.

Common AI visibility mistakes

  • Mixing up "AI can read us" with "AI recommends us." Passing a readiness check is necessary, not sufficient.
  • Testing once. One good or bad answer tells you almost nothing.
  • Only asking branded questions. "What is [your business]?" will usually name you. Customers ask the category question instead.
  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident through an old robots.txt rule or a security setting, then never checking again.
  • Chasing one score instead of looking at which questions, tools and competitors are behind it.
  • Treating llms.txt or schema as magic. Neither replaces clear pages and real third-party mentions.
  • Ignoring wrong facts. An inaccurate mention can cost you more than no mention.
  • Paying for "guaranteed ChatGPT placement." There's no paid slot in organic AI answers, and nobody can guarantee a mention.

Where Rankateer fits (honestly)

Rankateer is an operating system for SEO and AI visibility. Its agent, Ranger, works in a loop: Watch → Find → Propose → Act → Measure. It watches your site and Google data, finds gaps, proposes fixes, acts only after you approve, then measures what changed.

What that means for AI visibility today:

  • The free AI visibility checker shows whether AI can read a page. It does not check whether AI mentions you.
  • Ranger's live AI visibility check covers Google's AI. It asks questions built from your business description, stores each answer, and records whether you were named, which sources were cited and which competitors appeared. It does not track ChatGPT or Perplexity live yet. Use the manual test above for those.
  • Nothing is guaranteed. Rankateer doesn't promise rankings, traffic or AI mentions. It reports what it can verify.

If you want the widest set of SEO research reports, a big suite like Semrush has more of them. Rankateer's bet is narrower: turn AI visibility and SEO gaps into a short list of approved fixes, then show what moved. See how they compare in Rankateer vs Semrush.

Two easy next steps:

  1. Run your homepage through the free AI visibility checker. No signup.
  2. If you want Ranger working on your site, try it for $1 for the first 7 days, then $29/month. Cancel anytime.

FAQ

What is AI visibility in simple terms?

AI visibility is whether AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews mention your business, link to your website, and describe you correctly when people ask questions related to what you sell. It's measured by asking those tools real customer questions and recording the answers.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap. SEO is about where your pages rank in a list of search results. AI visibility is about whether an AI answer names or links you. Good SEO helps, because AI tools pull from search indexes, but you can rank well and still not be named in AI answers.

How do I check my AI visibility for free?

Write 10 customer questions that don't include your brand name. Ask each one in a fresh chat in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and on Google. Record whether you're named, linked and described correctly, and who is named instead. Repeat on three different days. Separately, use a free readiness checker to confirm AI can read your pages.

What is a good AI visibility score?

There's no universal benchmark, and no standard formula. Scores from different tools aren't comparable. The useful comparison is your own mention rate against your main competitors, for the same questions on the same AI tools, tracked over time. Also check whether a score measures readiness (can AI read you) or mentions (does AI name you).

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

Technical fixes, such as unblocking crawlers, can help as soon as your pages are re-crawled, often within weeks. Getting mentioned on review sites, directories and lists takes longer, usually months. Measure monthly with the same questions so you can see real change rather than day-to-day noise.

Can I pay to be mentioned by ChatGPT or Google's AI?

There's no paid slot in organic AI answers, and no one can guarantee a mention. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed placement. What works is making your site easy for AI to read, stating clear facts about your business, and earning mentions on sites AI tools already trust.

Does Rankateer track ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Not live, today. Ranger's live AI visibility check covers Google's AI answers. The free AI visibility checker tests whether AI tools can read your page, not whether they mention you. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, use the manual prompt test in this guide.
